Review:
John Hawkes continues to impress with its chameleon incarnation of unusual characters. This time he played Mark O'Brien, 36, polio victim who has spent his life in a horizontal iron lung. Based on a true story, O'Brien is a poet and a romantic who has never had sexual experience. After consulting with his priest (William H. Macy, embodies a radical Berkeley father), he makes contact with the therapist and handle sexual surrogate, Helen Hunt. Their meetings are at the heart of this film and call the public and Marc on a journey of self-awareness and discovery. Hawkes is simply amazing. It permeates the character of innocence, hope and twisted humor in what can only be described as a touring show of force. Hunt is also adept in his role with professionalism, playfulness, sensuality and compassion in a series of meetings that require full nudity. Both players are fearless in the pursuit of justice and humanity, and that Oscar-caliber performance, thanks to the sensitive direction of writer / director Ben Lewin.
