Review:
When this film first appeared in 1980, remember I saw it on opening night. The terror I felt in seeing The Shining was enough to let me go to sleep with the light on every night for a whole summer. This movie scared the life out of me, and that's what still happens every time I rent the video for a re-watch. I saw the Shining at least six or seven times, and I still believe it is the same time and oddly enough, one of the most frightening and yet funniest movies I've ever seen. Fear because of the remarkably effective use of long shots to create feelings of isolation, the convex lens shots to enhance surrealism, and carefully recorded music for bringing levels tensãoa levels almost insuportá; statement. And funny because Jack Nicholson outrageous and often on-screen antics ad-libbed. It never ceases to amaze me how The Shining is actually two films in one, both a comedy and a horror movie. Spiritual appearances ghost threatening nature exceptionally good part of the first half of the film, which gradually developed into physical threats increasingly serious as time progresses. Anyway, there is surprisingly little violence, given the apparent intensity, but that is little comfort for the feint of heart, both of terror to reveal more implicit. The Shining is a truly terrifying film symbolic on many levels, but it is basically about human weaknesses and how they can be exploited by unconscious forces, together with the weakness of the will. This film scares more using only the proposal to turn your own imagination against you. The Shining is a brilliant film masterpiece, the likes of which have never been seen before or since. Highly, highly recommended. - Paul
